UMZIMVUBU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY TOGETHER WITH SASSA PROVIDE FOOD PARCEL RELIEF TO MORE THAN 500 LOCAL RESIDENTS AT UMZIMVUBU

 APRIL 2020 – THURSDAY
Umzimvubu Local Municipality together with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provided food parcels to more than 500 local beneficiaries today. The initiative follows the pronouncement made by the President for a nation-wide lockdown amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Food parcels were handed out to local residents in KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni. This initiative targeted those who are unable to work amid the regulations put in place to contain the novel coronavirus.
“Social relief of distress is a temporary provision of assistance intended for persons in such a dire material need that they are unable to meet their families’ most basic needs. A special provision has been made by SASSA to accommodate those who are unable to work during this lockdown period. 13 food parcels per ward have been delivered today in various wards across Umzimvubu and will continue being delivered throughout next week” said Umzimvubu Mayor, Cllr Sobane Mnukwa.
“In another effort to alleviate hunger, we have called upon local residents and businesses for food parcel donations. We are confident that our people will heed to the call and display the best practices of Ubuntu” concluded Umzimvubu Mayor.
The municipality continues to advocate for compliance from local residents to remain at home during this period so as to flatten the curve of the virus.
